The program is by invitation only and participants have a close working relationship with Masur staff. Shell’s exhibition, Identity, will be on view at Gallery Jatad from May 7 to June 13, 2015. The Opening Reception is on Saturday, May 9, from 3-6 pm. Shell will speak at 4pm. Gallery Jatad is located at 1517 Blodgett St, Houston, TX 77004.

Identity combines the artwork of two artists from Louisiana with antique African sculptural and textile objects. Gabrielle Savoy and Vitus Shell decipher their cultures and the archetypal characters that play a role in everyday life and community rituals. The antique African masks, figures, and textile objects from multiple tribes were created to be used in rituals to make order of and decipher the world around them. The photographs of Gabrielle Savoy and the collaged paintings of Vitus Shell converse beautifully with the antique African objects. The contemporary portraits create a dynamic juxtaposition with the figurative African portraits made of wood, ceramic, and fiber.

Vitus Shell has exhibited at the Masur Museum of Art, Treo New Orleans in conjunction with Prospect 3, the New Orleans Museum of Art, Stephen F. Austin Gallery in Nacogdoches, Texas, and many others. He holds an MFA from the University of Mississippi, Oxford. In 2006, he was awarded a Joan Mitchell Foundation Graduate Fellowship followed by a residency at the Joan Mitchell Center in 2013. Shell was also a participant in the Residency program at Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture in 2008.
