  Artists Selected to Participate in Winter/Spring 2018 Residency Program Omaha, Neb.– Bemis Center for Contemporary Arts announces  artists selected for its international Artist-in-Residence Program  taking place  January 10–April 6, 2018 . The diverse range of disciplines includes painting, drawing, poetry, digital animation, sculpture, performance, printmaking, installation, graphic design, music, photography and filmmaking. Represented areas of focus include identity; how materialism forms culture; generational stories; social systems and institutions; psychological and physical iconography; black culture in America; recreational activities and their relationship to the landscape; and speculative fiction. With the help of Accie Sullivan III, Kayden Lirette, and Roneshia Robichaux, three of my students from the University of Louisiana at Monroe, we recently completed a mural for the Community Soup Kitchen in South Monroe at 219 Plum St. The mural depicts the founder Lillie "Granny" Goins and celebrates her love of the community. The project was possible with the donations from the community. The Community Soup Kitchen has served the community of South Monroe since 1989. After talking with the Salvation Army and finding that they didn't have a feeding program, Lillie "Granny" Goins and her husband, Poppa, started feeding the homeless of downtown Monroe from the trunk of their car. The Soup Kitchen moved into it's current location in 1997. After Granny Goins passed 2007, her daughter, Gladys has keep the vision of her parents alive by feeding the community every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday.

New Mural by Vitus Shell on View in Crosstown Louisiana native Vitus Shell is the latest artist to be featured in Crosstown Arts’ ongoing mural series, The Moonpie Project. The public can meet the artist and see his new installation at an opening reception on Friday, December 9th from 5 to 7 p.m. The mural will remain on view in the alley between Crosstown Arts and the Cleveland Street Flea Market, facing N. Cleveland Street, through early February. The mural features a colorful pop art-inspired portrait of a African American woman alongside the words “Protect Her!,” a particularly relevant and socially aware message in an era when some would say women’s rights have come under attack.
